How to Naturally Fade Dark Marks and Blemishes

skin care foodsDark marks and blemishes can keep you from having the flawless complexion you’ve always wanted. But if you are concerned about the effect of chemicals on your skin, you can try some of these natural ways to fade skin discoloration and achieve an even skin tone. The result? Moisturized, vibrant, young looking skin.

Lemon Juice

Chances are, you have a few lemons laying around your kitchen. Not only does this citrus fruit have natural bleaching properties that can help fade your dark spots, it also helps keep your skin soft and clear. Simply apply lemon juice to the affected areas and leave on for 30 minutes before completing your normal cleansing regimen. This can be done twice a day; if you have sensitive skin that gets irritated by the citrus, try diluting it with water before application. Alternatively, you can add a bit of sugar and olive to make a scrub, which can be applied three times a week and left on for about 10 minutes.

Horseradish

If lemon juice isn’t quite cutting it, try combining the above procedure with an additional horseradish spot treatment. Just mix the condiment with vinegar and honey and apply to the affected areas, allowing it to soak in for about 20 minutes before rinsing off. Make sure to apply SPF if you’re planning to go out in the sun, since these ingredients can make your skin more sensitive to the damaging effects of UV rays.

Potato

Some plant enzymes, known as proteases, break up the melanin that darkens your skin, causing dark spots to fade and appear less noticeable. Potato aspartic protease is one example that is found in all types of white potatoes. To reap the benefits of these plant enzymes, finely grate the flesh of the potato into a medium bowl and combine with honey to make a paste. Apply to the dark spots on your face for about 20 minutes before washing off. Other fruits and veggies that are rich in proteases include papaya and chickpeas, both of which can be mashed into a mask that is applied to the face as described above. Try using a hand mixer for a smooth consistency. You can also try pineapple juice, either squeezed directly from the pineapple or purchased already bottled (but make sure there are no added ingredients).

Sugar, Nutmeg, and Coconut Mask

This combination is especially effective for women suffering from hormonal melasma, a dark discoloration on the face often caused by pregnancy or menopause. If that describes your issue, mix 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1 tablespoon of coconut milk, and add 2-3 drops of clove essential oil. Apply to the face and leave on for about 20 minutes before rinsing with cool water. This mask includes lactic and glycolic acids, both are a key ingredient in the best natural skin lightening cream without side effects and both have a lightening effect on the skin, as well as compounds that help regulate hormones.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk also contains lactic acid, which helps exfoliate the skin for a soft, smooth, youthful glow as well as reduce the appearance of dark spots. Either apply buttermilk to the dark spots with a cotton ball and leave on for about 5 to 10 minutes, or try a 2:1 mixture of buttermilk and tomato juice applied to the entire face. This regimen should be repeated once or twice a day until desired effects are achieved.

Red Onion

This pungent vegetable is rich in acids that are incredibly effective in reducing the appearance of dark spots to brighten the skin. Simply juice or blend the onion and saturate a cotton swab in the resulting liquid. Apply for about 10 to 15 minutes to each area you want to lighten, then wash off with a strong cleanser that will eliminate the onion smell from your skin (not exactly the impression you want to make).
